39-37: BYU, Arizona, Clemson

Rivals Says: Auburn

I Say.........

39. BYU Cougars

Many will probably think that I have the Cougs a bit underated but this is very much a rebuilding year for the Stormin' Mormons and the MWC looks to be more competitive than ever, so I think this is a very reasonable spot. The Cougars struggled a lot on defense last year and while certain players have seemingly markedly improved, the unit as whole looks to be at about the same level. The real worry is the turnover on offense. A new starting quarterback will take over Max Hall, he will also be throwing to two new tight ends, and the biggest problem is the dismissal of star RB Harvey Unga. The offensive line has a lot of talent, and new starting QB Jake heaps was one of the top recruits in the nation last year. There is a lot of talent, as always, but I think there is to much turnover for the Cougars to break through this year. Over the last decade, when it comes to the BCS, the answer from BYU has benn:

Unfortunately for a fan base that is starting to get impatient waiting for the breakout season, this year will be no different. Another Las Vegas or Poinsettia bwol is likely, could be worse, but Cougs fans know it has to be better eventually.

I say......

38. Arizona Wildcats

The Wildcats had a great season with a poor ending last year. They beat USC at the Colisieum in the first time in an eternity, they fought conference champ Oregon into overtime, and came as close as they ever have to winning the PAC-10. Then came bowl season. After a 33-0 humiliation at the hands of Nebraska, the Wildcats were left wondering when this program would finally, if ever, turn the corner. This coming season will be the last for the PAC-1o, and after thrirty years, Arizona has still never seen the Rose Bowl. The Wildcats will not be the conference favorite, but the PAC-10 looks stable compared to the hectic race that left Oregon, Stanford, USC, Arizona, and Oregon State as potential winners in the last few weeks. This year you can add Washington to clustered middle of the pack, that should include the entire conference except Arizona State and Washington State.

The Cats will be loaded on offense. QB Nick Foles is a true star, one of many at his position in the PAC-10, and should be able to light up the scoreboard at any given moment. RB Nick Grigsby and WR Juron Criner help ake up what could be one of the the best three man attacks in the nation. The talent is not limited to the skill positions either, C Colin Baxter is thought to be a potential all-american. The defense is subject, like most teams in the PAC-10, the best team is likely the one that comes up with the most stops. That team will probably not be Arizona. The teams starters on the defensive line combined for 17 tackles last year.

The schedule is favorable, with Cal, Oregon State, USC, and Washington at home, along with the big out of conference match up against Iowa. Oregon and Stanford are on the road, but in a league this deep, there was no chance of getting all the big ones at home. If the Wildcats don't do big things, the schedule is not to blame.

A bowl is certain, but it is very hard to pick where the Cats will finish. I don't think they are good enough to win the PAC-10, but could finish as high as third. However the division is deep enough that they could also finish seventh.
