7. Oklahoma State
Oklahoma State appears to be on the cusp of making an unlikely rise to prominence. When Mike Gundy arrived in Stillwater, expectations were low, the Cowboys are on the wrong end of the single most lopsided in-state rivalry against Oklahoma. Under Gundy, the Pokes have increased their win total every year and last year set a school record by winning 11 games, and that team was a consensus pick to finish last place in the Big 12 South.
This year expectations are high. The Cowboys could very well have the best offense in the nation this season. QB Brandon Weeden and WR Justin Blackmon tortured defenses last year and should be the top QB-WR combo in the country and the offensive line could also be the best in the country and almost certainly have the best in the conference. The one question mark is how to replace RB Kendall Hunter, a 1,500 yard rusher from a year ago.
The defense is average in almost every way. There are no stars on this squad anywhere and that could be a problem. Last year the two Cowboys losses came with each team scoring over 30 points. If the defense can even improve slightly, the offense should make them good enough to win games.
My biggest reason for my faith in this team is head coach Mike Gundy. He has turned around this woeful program and has exceeded expectations every year on campus, has brought in better recruits, and has the support of his players. He has grown up a lot since being a 40-year old man.
Prediction: 10-2 BCS at large, Sugar Bowl.
