It Just Didn’t Feel
Right
Oklahoma State Cowboys at Iowa State Cyclones 11/18/2011
I have never been sadder watching a team I had no vested interest in lose than I was on this night. The Cowboys entered the game as the #2 ranked team in the country, and Mike Gundy had turned this team from laughing stock to national title contender in a hurry. An overwhelming favorite, this game felt like a speed bump on the way to the BCS championship game.
But tragedy struck the crew from Stillwater, the night before the game, a plane crash claimed the life of OSU’s women’s basketball coach, and the Cowboy sports program had a day of mourning to prep for the Friday night showdown in Ames.
What ensued was an upset for the ages, with the Cyclones sending a ripple effect through the college football landscape. Three weeks later, the BCS opted to send the Alabama Crimson Tide (a team that had not played for, or won, a conference championship) to the national championship game to play an LSU team that had already beaten them that season, instead of letting the Cowboys in. It felt wrong having the celebration feel like a dance party on the backbone of a grieving OSU program, and it felt worse knowing it wrecked any chance that the champion would feel legitimate come seasons end.
